Day 26 . . . The Oven is Done!

Words cannot express the thrill and amazement we feel announcing this to all of you! The oven is officially complete. It was the final stretch that proved to throw the biggest challenge to us. The help of two very precious friends enabled us to finish the oven.

The oven at this point starts to take on a personality, and it seemed to be patiently waiting for Tom and I to recover from whatever this "flu" bug was so that it could have the rest of it's body completed. Ryan and Kaite came to the rescue. Kaite would be able to help me work the concrete into the spaces of the support cage that went over the baking chamber, and Ryan, with brute strength would be able to lift shovel fulls of the very heavy concrete up to us. Tom would be responsible for mixing the concrete.

The support structure gets it's final inspection by Tom.

Here we all are. Thanks to a little remote I purchased for the camera,
we were able to get this shot.

Happy Birthday BakeHouse Oven!

Ryan, Kaite, Me (& Bradley) & Tom
It's these moments that are treasured the most. We'll always remember this day. So when will there be bread you ask! Soon, very soon. We have to let the masonry mass dry out some more before we can even think about starting a small fire, otherwise, steam will be created and it will crack the mass.

Tom will now start building the BakeHouse building. I will be getting the room that will become our little commercial kitchen emptied and painted and El Paso Electric has been re scheduled to come on Tuesday. We're at a point now were things are starting to happen fast - it's a little overwhelming but very, very exciting. Thanks again for checking in and I'll be posting again very soon! Thoughtfully - Kath

  1. Hi Kathy,

Congrats on fishing your oven! We are moving along on ours, but I have a question (or two), in regards to the cement board and foamglas...how thick are the cement board sheets, and what is the thickness of the foamglas that you used? Foamglas seems to come in various sizes...

    Thanks!

  2. Good morning Ned, I'm sorry that it's taking so long to get back to you. To answer you questions. The cement board was approximately 7/16" thick - I purchased it at Lowes. The foamglas was 2" thick. I used two layers for a total of 4" of foamglas. I did it this way because of the way they packaged the foamglas for the amount I needed. Hope that helps.

    1. No worries Tom. Your progress is inspiring! We are moving along with ours, an seeing your completed is awesome! I do have two more questions (at least...) On day 13 when you put your cement board down, did the second sheet cover the center support column? It looks like the first layer went up to the top of the column, so I am assuming the 2nd covered? And, thanks for the info on the foamglas! Other than being 2" thick, what were the dimensions of the tiles? Thanks again for your time!
